No Redirect URLs Allowed In Google Maps Business Listings

The latest new clarification to the Google Places guidelines is that your listings page cannot contain any URLs that redirect to other URLs.

Jade Wang, Google Maps support representative, added the clarification to the Google Business Help forums yesterday explaining that while redirects are not allowed, tracking parameters are.

Jade said:

We do not allow URLs that allow redirection, though adding tracking parameters to your regular URL for the business or the business location is allowed.

The examples she gave are:------

  *  Not Allowed: Walmart.stor.es/ which later direct user to http://www.walmart.com.
  *  Allowed: http://www.walmart.com/

This new clarification comes after two other clarifications including:

Google Warns of Major Penguin Update For 2013

Speaking on a panel at SMX West in the US this week, Matt Cutts, Head of Web Spam for search engine giant Google, has warned of a major Panda algorithm update that he believes will be one of the most talked about Google updates of the year. That’s an ominous warning for the SEO industry – since 2011, Google’s Panda and Penguin updates have sent marketers and SEOs scrambling to reengineer strategies to address major changes in the way the search engine ranks sites.

More and more sites are being penalised for reliance on high volumes of low quality links – Cutts reiterated during the SMX West panel ‘Search Engine Police’ that the top priorities for SEO are content and user experience. Link networks are being targeted heavily by Google, and retailers who rely on these for link-building may be in for a shock. If Google succeeds in its goal, we will witness a systematic dismantling of suspect link-building strategies, and an ever-growing demand for quality content and quality links. It’s a change that has been occurring for some time now, and one all online retailers need to prepare for, as cheap, automated SEO is well and truly in the sights of the search police. Download our latest report on content for more insights.

In addition to the ‘significant’ Penguin update coming, Cutts said there is a new Panda update also being released within the next week.

Matt Cutts Confirms Panda Update Coming This Friday

Late last night Matt Cutts was on stage at SMX talking about Penguin and Panda updates.  When asked about Panda updates and when will be the next one, Matt Cutts confirms a Panda update will be coming this Friday or Monday at the latest.

Cutts also said that they are in a heated battle with spam, trying to take down spammers and people trying to abuse the system.  In an effort to decrease web spam Google said there would be one VERY large Penguin update before the end of the year.  This isn’t that helpful but is interesting that there are additional large updates out there that we all can be waiting for.

Let’s be honest though, if you’re doing everything right and not spamming the world… you should be good!

Cutts also confirms that they’ll be taking down 1-2 very large link networks in the coming weeks.  they’ve been tracking them and studying them over the past couple months and they are about to take action.

Link Networks Beware

Additionally Cutts joked around about the increase of spammers and some of the tricky ways they are going after large organizations, exposing vulnerabilities and security flaws in sites.  Make sure your site is secure.

Matt Cutts recommended using the “Fetch as Googlebot” tool to make sure that you’re seeing your site as Google is seeing it.  There are many sites with spam on there sites that can’t see the links that they are showing (referenced a University on their main page in live example of spam) where you couldn’t see unless you went into the code.  Google bot shows that a Top 50 University has “cheap viagra pills” on their main page.  All Google is doing currently is emailing them through Google Webmaster Tools about this situation.

Make sure you’re checking GWT for emails from Google, it could be a lifesaver and be expecting a Google Panda update this Friday the 15 of March.

Google Panda Update Coming Within Days; 'Next Generation' of Penguin in Works

You can expect another Google Panda update to roll out this Friday or Monday, according to Google’s Distinguished Engineer Matt Cutts. Also, Cutts has revealed that Google is working on a significant change to the Penguin algorithm.

Google Panda Update Coming Within Days

Panda is Google’s algorithm aimed at surfacing high-quality sites higher in search results. It was first released in February 2011.The next Panda update (or refresh) is due to arrive either Friday (March 15) or Monday (March 18, Cutts said according to reports coming out of the SMX West conference. Google’s last Panda refresh (and only one so far in 2013) was January 22 and affected 1.2 percent of English queries.Keep on your analytics over the next few days. If you see an unexplainable surge in traffic, it could indicate that Panda is about to maul your website.

Google Penguin: The Next Generation

It isn’t known when the next Penguin update will arrive, but Cutts revealed Google is working on a “new generation of Penguin.” The Penguin algorithm, initially released last April, was designed to reduce web spam and also hit website that had link profiles that appeared unnatural. The most recent Penguin refresh was in October. Also, Cutts said the update will be significant and one of the most talked about Google algorithm updates this year. Which would make that two years running.

Cutts also put out word that Google plans to target more link networks this year, including one or two big ones within the next few weeks.Could the next generation of Penguin somehow be related to another big change Cutts had already announced Google is working on involving merchant quality? Hard to know at this point, but what’s clear is the next few months are likely to get pretty bumpy for many websites and merchants on Google.

Contact search highlights Google Maps for iPhone update

Mapping is still a contentious issue for many iOS users, and Google looks to be taking advantage of that chink in Apple’s armor to improve its own offering. A new update to the free Google Maps for iPhone, released on Tuesday, adds a couple of new capabilities, whittling away at iOS 6’s last remaining competitive advantages. When I reviewed Google Maps in December, I noted one key weakness that the app had compared to iOS’s built-in map option:

That said, Google Maps does have at least one notable shortcoming in search: Unlike Apple’s built-in Maps, it can’t recognize your contacts. So if you start entering John Smith, Google Maps won’t offer to find John Smith’s address—rather, it will look for a John Smith Street.

Though it will now search your contacts, they often come buried among other, less relevant results.

Tuesday’s update corrects that shortcoming, but of course does it in a typically Google fashion: The app doesn’t access your iOS devices’ built-in contacts, but rather pulls them from your Google account—which means that you must have a Google account and be logged in. That’s a benefit for Google, and a bit of a poke in Apple’s eye, though Google does point out in its blog post that it’s not too difficult to sync your iOS devices contacts with your Google account.Though in my tests, contact searching does work, I found that Google Maps did a poor job of prioritizing my contacts in the search results. Searching for our editorial director “Jason Snell” placed him several entries down on the list, despite my spelling out his entire name. It’s possible Google will refine this over time, but it seems obvious that contacts should pop to the top of the list.

The quick search bar is handy for finding the kinds of locations mobile users are often searching for.

In addition to integrating contact search, Google’s added a handy set of shortcuts for often used searches, saving you the time of laboriously typing the same entries. When you tap on the search field—but only, somewhat confusingly, when it’s empty—a set of icons appears beneath it letting you quickly search for restaurants, coffee, bars, or gas stations in the vicinity of your current search. Tap the More icon and you’ll get a handful of additional shortcuts, including post offices, hotels, grocery stores, pharmacies, movie theaters, malls, hospitals, ATMs, and attractions. That’s a clever feature for the iPhone, where on-the-go users might not want to spend the time typing their search terms—not to mention it allows Google to more easily populate your results with its local search service.

Speaking of Google’s predilection for integrating its services, I was somewhat surprised that the company’s Google Search app still doesn’t hook into Google Maps for iPhone—instead, tapping an address in the search app kicks you out to Google Maps in Safari. It seems like an obvious oversight in Google’s burgeoning iOS ecosystem.A couple other changes have made their way into this recent update, including the ability to set the distance units for the app to miles or kilometers (in addition to an automatic option that will decide for you, based on where you search). Google is also bringing the English version of the app to a number of Middle Eastern countries: Bahrain, Egypt, Lebanon, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and UAE.

With the addition of contacts, the only remaining mark against Google Maps is that I wish there were a native version for the iPad—though the old leave-’em-wanting-more strategy may well work in Google’s favor.

Google boosts search and sharing capabilities for Chrome on the iPhone

Google has improved the search and sharing features for its Chrome browser running on Apple's iOS smartphone and tablet platform.Chrome's update includes features that allow users to share web pages via email, messages and Facebook. Google's update offers an omnibox for streamlined search functionality.
Meanwhile Google also updated its Android Chrome app, improving browser speeds using the V8 JavaScipt engine.

"Speed is critical, especially when you're on the go," wrote Google mobile software engineers Grace Kloba and Rohit Rao in a blog post."With the latest version of Chrome for Android, you can scroll and fling to view all of your favorite web pages with even more speed and ease."

Google says that the Chrome update increases browser speed by over 25 percent. The comparison uses the Octane JavaScript benchmark tool to come up with that statistic. For iOS users, the addition of the omnibox search function to the mobile browser lets users search for keywords in the longform URL bar instead of the traditional Google search box.

Sharing gets a boost with the ability to share webpages directly from the browser. Users who update Chrome can send webpages to email addresses, the Messages app, and Facebook pages by accessing the Share category through the Menu.Along with the performance updates, Google announced increased accessibility features for the Chrome app earlier this month. During this year's Annual International Technology and Persons with Disabilities Conference the firm said that the mobile browser for Chrome will now support Braille on Android 4.1 and over.

All updates are now available for download in the Google Play and Apple App Stor
